Walking on the late-night road in North Platte, Nebraska, Iggy and Izzy Lang hear the sound of an animal. It yelps a little. The wind carries the yelp to them and away from them like the yelper is moving both closer and farther away at the same time. Iggy and Izzy Lang walk towards the sound of the yelping. As they walk, the streetlamps’ circles of yellow make them go in and out of spotlight. The yelping sounds louder. They exit one circle of light, and before they can enter another, they almost step on the yelper, a small boy maybe six or seven years their younger. What are you doing? says Izzy. Where is your mother?
